Growing up as a Muslim in a non-Muslim country is difficult and that is the understatement of the year.

All dressed up, my friends and I cheerily chatted up as we waited at the crosswalk on our way to our middle school award ceremony. Just then, a group of guys in their late teens drove by screaming degrading remarks, “Towel heads!”

Islam is a simple way of life. It’s our love for the dunya that complicates it for us. In order to justify where we may fall short on understanding, we choose to remain how we are and hold onto the mantra that only God can judge us when in reality we are not ready to stand before Him and be held accountable for our deeds.
